Im 1. Buch befreit Willehalm nach mehreren Niederlagen endlich die s\u00fcdfranz\u00f6sische Stadt Orange aus den H\u00e4nden des heidnischen F\u00fcrsten Tybalt und nimmt dessen Tochter Arabel als Geisel. In ihrer Gefangenschaft konvertiert sie aufgrund der Bekehrungsrede von Ritter Willehalm zum Christentum, nimmt den Namen Giburg an und heiratet Willehalm. Kernthema der Erz\u00e4hlung in neun B\u00fcchern sind neben den K\u00e4mpfen um Orange die famili\u00e4ren Beziehungen der Protagonisten. Den historischen Hintergrund bildet die Geschichte des Grafen Wilhelm von Aquitanien, eines Verwandten Karls des Gro\u00dfen, der nach einem Kriegsleben in das Benediktinerkloster Aniane eintrat.<\/p>\n<p>Wolfram von Eschenbach wirbt im 1209 bis 1217 verfassten Text f\u00fcr Toleranz, stellt inhumane Methoden in Frage, indem in seinem St\u00fcck auch die Heiden f\u00fcr ihre Religion k\u00e4mpfen, ritterliche Tugenden zeigen und die Besiegten schonen. 70 erhaltene Handschriften belegen, dass der \u201eWillehalm\u201c sehr beliebt war.<\/p>\n<p>Das Doppelblatt ist Teil einer Willehalmhandschrift. Es bildete den Deckel eines j\u00fcngeren Buches und wurden erst 1928 im Archiv der Churburg entdeckt. Das Textfragment belegt die Rezeption des \u201eChanson de geste\u201c im Tiroler Raum. Es ist zeitlich in das letzte Drittel des 13. Jh. zu datieren. Das Fragment bildet das drittinnerste Blatt einer Lage.
