Sie erm\u00f6glichen die kultische Verehrung des Johanneshauptes, wie es dem Bericht des Matth\u00e4usevangeliums (Mt 14,6\u201311) nach Salome, der Tochter K\u00f6nig Herodes\u2018 \u00fcberreicht wurde. Das Motiv findet sich in den Predellen sp\u00e4tgotischer Schnitzalt\u00e4re, an Schlusssteinen und plastischen Bildwerken. Im volksfrommen Glauben wurde dem plastischen Bild magische Kraft zugeschrieben. Die naturalistische Wiedergabe des abgeschlagenen Hauptes betont den eingetretenen Tod in den halbgeschlossenen Augenlidern und dem ge\u00f6ffneten Mund, der den Blick auf Zunge und Z\u00e4hne freigibt. Hier tritt noch eine zus\u00e4tzliche Stirnwunde hinzu, welche auf Momente der Peinigung vor der Enthauptung verweist, das austretende Blut sucht die Angleichung an ein Christushaupt aus der
