M\u00e4rz 1693, um 1 Uhr in der Nacht: am Schneeberg am \u00dcbergang zwischen dem Passeier- und dem Ridnauntal auf \u00fcber 2300 m H\u00f6he versch\u00fcttete eine Staublawine 70 Knappen des dortigen Silber- und Bleibergwerks, 19 von ihnen starben. In Erinnerung an das tragische Ereignis wurde eine Votivtafel in die Marienkirche von Trens in der Pfarre Stilfes bei Sterzing gestiftet: Sie zeigt das Ungl\u00fcck, dar\u00fcber in Wolken die sch\u00fctzende Madonna von Trens, einem Gnadenbild aus der Zeit um 1440.<\/p>\n<p>Im unteren Bilddrittel knien die \u2013 durch ein rotes Kreuz \u00fcber den K\u00f6pfen als verstorben gekennzeichneten \u2013 Bergknappen um einen Kruzifixus. Die nur mehr bruchst\u00fcckhaft erhaltene Inschrift nennt als Stifter der Tafel den Kaiserlichen Handelsverweser Joseph von Leitnern. Die Namen der 19 Versch\u00fctteten lassen sich noch weitgehend entziffern, sie sind im Rang ihrer Aufnahme und ihres Alters aufgef\u00fchrt.<\/p>\n<p>Die stete Lawinengefahr im Hochgebirge war nur eine von vielen Bedrohungen bei der gef\u00e4hrlichen Arbeit in den Bergwerken.
